The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…

We have started school back up, which I have been really enjoying. Also, I have been getting the house ready for house guests.

In our homeschool this week…

We did a flower experiment and started back up with the Outdoor Hour Challenges, which I will share more about next week.  I am working on how I would like to progress with my sons reading lessons. I also want to start working on having him memorizing some songs.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

I started reading a book called ‘Reading with Meaning’ by Debbie Miller because I heard it mentioned several times with raving reviews. Boy am I glad I bought it; after many notes and ideas, narration, which is one of the fundamentals of the Charlotte Mason method, is so much clearer to me. I now see how narration is extremely important to reading comprehension. The best part is, it showed me what narration is even though this author does not use the term ‘narration’. I suggest that if anyone is new to the Charlotte Mason method and don’t really understand what narration is, they should go and read this book.

I am inspired by…

A friend who is experiencing problems in her life but she keeps persevering no matter what.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

We will be going to Paddle to Squaxin this week.

My favorite thing this week was…

My son finally got a referral to a speech therapist. After the fiasco of the supposed speech therapist in preschool, I am hoping this will work out! His appointment is on the seventh of August So I will keep you informed.

What’s not working for us…

Wingnut is at a hangup in his reading lessons. We have been using the book called ‘Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons’ by Siegfried Englemann. After reading the book I mentioned above ‘Reading with Meaning’, I think I will be switching our reading lessons for a while and maybe permanently depending I how it goes. I am going to read a couple more books and then I will start to try implementing it into our lessons: maybe in a month.

Questions/thoughts I have…

Did your Pediatrician perform a test at your childs five-year check up? Mine did, she wanted him to write his name, draw some shapes, say his colors and tell her which pen was longer or shorter. Is this normal?

Things I’m working on…

I am working on doing our school work at the same time each day.

I’m reading…

The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle

I’m cooking…

This good Crusty bread recipe. Although I don’t have the fancy Le Creuset dutch oven, just a normal cast iron one and it still works.

I’m grateful for…

God creating vegetables so I can grow them in my garden 🙂

I’m praying for…

Patience when dealing with my husband and son.
